FIRST AWARD GRANTED

The Somers Education Foundation announces the award of its first grant to the science department of the Somers Public Schools. This grant will allow 40 students a unique learning opportunity in the forensics field. The project is the “vision” of Mary Anne Butler, Science Specialist, who will supervise all facets of this program. The project is to construct a crime scene, where an act of arson occurs and students will be responsible for the investigation. Lou Bachetti, President of the Foundation states, “This unique project brings together many private and municipal resources for the benefit of our students.”

A ceremonial presentation and project overview will be held on Thursday December 2, at 10:00 am at the Somers Firehouse in the Craig Arnone Memorial Hall. The presentation will be followed by the “project burn” under the supervision of the Somers Fire Department. Students will conduct the arson investigation on December 7th and 8th. The public is invited to attend.

GEISSLER'S SUPERMARKET SUPPORTS THE SOMERS EDUCATION FOUNDATION

Geissler's Supermarket, which recently opened in Somers, has agreed to support the Somers Education Foundation's efforts to raise funds through a "Save Your Receipt" program.

Geissler's will donate a percentage of all submitted Geissler's grocery receipts over $35 (excluding alcohol and cigarettes) to the Somers Education Foundation.

SEF President Lou Bachetti said, "We are very appreciative of this support and commitment to our community's students from Jim Nilsson, the president of Geissler's. Donated dollars will be utilized to award grants to the schools in order expand students' horizons beyond the usual classroom experience."

Look for the Somers Education Foundation's "Save Your Receipt" boxes located at the Somers Public Library and Town Hall, or parents can submit their receipts by having their school-age children drop them off at the donation boxes located in the Somers Public Schools main offices.  Receipts and donations can also be mailed to SEF, P.O.
