Grants

The grant program is available to teachers and administrators in the Somers elementary, middle and high schools. Each grant application is coordinated by the school administration and is forwarded to the Foundation. A grant review committee consisting of parents, educators and SEF board members thoroughly examine each application and make recommendations to the board of directors for a final decision.


2011 Grants Awarded:

AT&T Career Exploration SHS.  Provided funding for the Alternative Education Program which supports career exploration for at-risk high school students.

 

Document Cameras & Tablets SHS.  Cameras allowing teachers in English, Spanish, and Science to display work, review assignments, and teach new concepts to an entire class in an engaging manner.

 

WMBA Video Switch MBA.  Equipment for the WMBA TV studio at the middle school which provides students the opportunity to learn and experience the various rolls of studio broadcast.

 

Classroom Learning Center SES.  This equipment promotes reading and fluency for our elementary school students.

 

Mimio Tech Technology SES, MBA.  State of the art technology turns a basic classroom whiteboard into an interactive learning device.  This innovative learning tool engages and motivates students of various ages.

 

Supporting Grieving Students MBA.  Provided crucial training and information necessary to help students through the grieving process after experiencing the loss of a family member or friend.

 

ITEEA Conference SHS.  The National Conference for Technology Education provided workshops, displays, and discussions on the latest topics and equipment in the field of technology.  Information gained was shared with staff and students.


Awarded Grants 2010-2005


2010 Grants Awarded:

VEX Robotics for Grades 6-12, Somers High School, Mabelle B. Avery Middle School.  These state of the art robotics will be available to students in high school and middle school with the goal of providing a robotics class with credits as part of the school curriculum.  This project is part of an overall STEM movement, a robotics  program for applied science, technology, engineering and mathmatics.  It provides our students exposure to the fields of the future.

 

Writers Workshop, Mabelle B. Avery Middle School.  This workshop provided insight and tools for teachers and students in planning and processing novel writing.

 

Document Cameras, Somers High School Math Department.  This state of the art camera equipment allows math teachers to display and solve math problems with the entire class, engaging and challenging students.

 

Connect Character Education, Somers Elementary School.  This character development program teaches students life long social development skills. 

 

Active Learning, Somers Elementary Preschool.  This equipment will promote gross motor skill development in our preschool students.

 

Projector Equipment, Somers High School, Somers Elementary School.  This state of the art equipment engages and challenges students through digital technology.  Students are exposed to a vast amount of information available through this process.

 

SAT Practice, Naviance, Somers High School.  This program allows students to practice for their SAT with various activities and tests which monitors the students progress and provides feedback for improvement.

 

Math Diagnostic Testing, Somers High School.  This program allows diagnostic testing of high school students in the math area early on in their high school career to identify and address any challenges to ensure success in this important discipline.
